This Sunday, a new episode ofThe Walking Dead airs on screens. The long-running zombie drama recently returned with new installments with the premiere of its 11th season back in August. Now it returns with the midseason finale.

This marks the end of an era for the beloved TV series as it is the final midseason finale that the show will produce. The eleventh season will be the AMC show's last, so the cable service has expanded it to a bumper 24 episodes, airing half of them this year and the other half of them next year (when it will return from its midseason hiatus).

Fans had predicted that the show would come to an end in the foreseeable future after the departure of long-serving leading man Andrew Lincoln resulted in the understandable departure of the show's protagonist Rick Grimes in season 9. And even though it carried on for a full tenth season without him, the decision was made to have its eleventh season be its last.

The final season also marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the TWD Universe, with new seasons ofFear The Walking Dead andThe Walking Dead: World Beyond on the horizon, as well as two new spin-offs – one of which will tell standalone stories set within the TWD Universe and another untitled project that will focus on TWD stars Carol Peletier and Daryl Dixon.
